With the 2012 Summer Olympics in London right round the corner—we can already hear Muse and the Spice Girls rehearsing their closing set some 5,000 miles away—we figured it was about time that pop music had a similar competition, in which the elite from every nation could square off in a series of events to determine which performer (and by extension, which country) is currently the greatest in the world. Well, maybe not every nation—sorry, Oman, you didn’t make the cut this year, nor you, the Cook Islands—but from four of our greatest pop-producing countries: the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and South Korea.
The process here in naming the winners among artists and countries is a two-step one. First, we need your help deciding which artists will be the representative competitors for their respective countries. We will have four separate polls, one for each of our select nations, in which you can vote from among four competitors each. The polls for these Pop Olympics “Trials,” which we have already linked to below, will run all week, and you can vote in them as many times as you want.
Then, the artists that win those polls will advance from the Trials to the actual Games next week. Again, we will ask for your help: This time in selecting the victor of various events in which all four representing artists will compete, such as Best Song and Best Video. At the end of the week, points will be tallied, and special prizes—medals, if you will—will be awarded to the victorious artist and nation.
So again, please vote in the Trial polls we have linked to below, for the chance to send your favorite artist to the second-most-anticipated international competition of this summer—and we promise, there’s no badminton or field hockey involved in this one.
