With the 2012 Summer Olympics in London right round the corner, we figured it was about time that pop music had a similar competition. So, four of our greatest pop-producing countries—The United States, Great Britain, Canada, and South Korea—will be squaring off on Popdust over the next two weeks in the first-ever Pop Olympics. Before the Games can begin, though, we need your help deciding which artists will be the representative competitors for their respective countries. We will have four separate polls, one for each of our select nations, in which you can vote from among four competitors each, the winners of whom will advance from the Trials to the actual Games next week.
Right now, we have the four artists competing for the right to represent Great Britain. (And yes, we know that two of our nominees have one Irish member each—we’re counting ‘em anyway.) Vote below, and remember, you can vote as many times as you want.
To compete in the Pop Olympics requires intense musical training, and Adele certainly qualifies. Her years at the BRIT School taught her both vocal poise and professionalism, her years dating what 21 makes seem like the worst guy ever have given her world-class motivation, and her years (it seems like) atop seemingly every country’s chart make her the one to beat.
Cher Lloyd’s by far one of the most exciting pop artists a show like The X Factor‘s ever produced. She’s got swag (anyone who covers Soulja Boy’s “Turn My Swag On” on a show often pooh-poohed as “a singing competition” has got to), she’s got determination, and on tracks like “Want U Back” and “With Ur Love,” she’s got unstoppable pop mettle.
Who better to represent Britain’s finest than One Direction, a bunch of fresh-faced lads with the sturdiest pop-rock anthems the country’s got to offer? They’ve got enough team spirit and followers to make any nation proud, and they’ll certainly ace the post-game interviews.
Many boy bands have vied for the crossover championship, but The Wanted burst right out of the gate, dropping a casually grownup line like “here’s another drink, drink it if you can” into their very first single. They’ve also got one of the best coaches in the business, Scooter Braun. Just gotta keep an eye on them in the Olympic Village.
