The 2012 Pop Olympics: Vote For Your South Korea Representative!

With the 2012 Summer Olympics in London right round the corner, we figured it was about time that pop music had a similar competition. So, four of our greatest pop-producing countries—The United States, Great Britain, Canada, and South Korea—will be squaring off on Popdust over the next two weeks in the first-ever Pop Olympics. Before the Games can begin, though, we need your help deciding which artists will be the representative competitors for their respective countries. We will have four separate polls, one for each of our select nations, in which you can vote from among four competitors each, the winners of whom will advance from the Trials to the actual Games next week.

Right now, we have the four artists competing for the right to represent South Korea. Vote below, and remember, you can vote as many times as you want.

They’ve declared “I Am the Best” in one of their chart-topping hits, and this summer, they’ll attempt to prove it as the representative of Team South Korea. The all-female four-piece pop/hip-hop group—a humble outfit by K-Pop standards—has already been named the “Best New Band in the World” by MTV Iggy, but they have all the skills to add more medals to their mantle in these Pop Olympics.

The “Best Worldwide Act” winner at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, Big Bang are clearly ready for the spotlight of the international games. With as much swagger and as diverse a routine as any of their rival groups, Big Bang are certainly one of South Korea’s front-runners—just don’t ask them all to wear the same uniform during the competition.

Practically an entire Olympic squadron solely on their own, Girls’ Generation are certainly an intimidating competitor for South Korea, rolling nine deep but remaining consistent and focused as a group. Their transfixing dance moves and smash hits like “Mr. Taxi,” “Paparazzi” and “The Boys” will likely dazzle international audiences, and make any rival solo artists feel hopelessly outmatched.

U.S. viewers of the Pop Olympics might be most familiar with the Wonder Girls of any of the groups in the South Korea trials, due to them being the only group with an actual Hot 100 hit, “Nobody.” But that song is just one of the many in-your-face pop smashes the Girls have scored in their home country, proving themselves a deadly-but-irresistible threat in this competition.
