With the 2012 Summer Olympics in London right round the corner, we figured it was about time that pop music had a similar competition. So, four of our greatest pop-producing nations—the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and South Korea—will be squaring off on Popdust over the next two weeks in the first-ever Pop Olympics. Before the Games can begin, though, we need your help deciding which artists will be the representative competitors for their respective countries. We will have four separate polls, one for each of our select nations, in which you can vote from among four competitors each, the winners of whom will advance from the Trials to the actual Games next week.
Right now, we have the four artists competing for the right to represent The U.S. Vote below, and remember, you can vote as many times as you want.
Probably the biggest star in the world to emerge over the four years since the last Olympics, Gaga would seem the clear favorite to represent the U.S., if not for an uncharacteristic absence from the Top 40 over the last 12 months. Don’t mistake Gaga’s low profile for a diminished work ethic, though—she’s simply training for her new album, likely to re-establish her as one of America’s top threats in the international games.
Though a relatively recent arrival on the scene, Nicki Minaj is actually the oldest competitor in the Team US trials. Still, at age 28, Minaj just seems to be rounding into her peak, remaining one of the baddest MCs in hip-hop while also setting her sights for the Top 40, proving with smashes like “Super Bass” and “Starships” she’s capable of any of the vocal and songwriting gymnastics of her pop peers.
Katy has been as active as anyone in the competition in the four years since the ’08 games, scoring seven chart-toppers and diversifying her routine to also include an acting career, a TV guest-judging stint and a couple perfume lines. Her relentless enthusiasm, as well as her constantly deepening pool of smash hits, will make her a tough out fighting for the Team US slot.
The baby of the group at age 22, the tall, lanky Taylor also may appear the least physically imposing of the Team US hopefuls. But don’t let the gait fool you—Taylor’s country-pop still packs a wallop, and like any great athletic competitor, she has the ability to take any personal slight from a rival and allow it to fuel her drive towards greatness. Just ask John Mayer.
