Here’s an Idol-rumor recap, for those who follow the news at a nice leisurely pace of daily at most: Mariah Carey became an American Idol judge amid a chatterstorm of talk about how the show as cutting its budgets, including the judging budget*. Less than one hour later, TMZ swooped in bearing rumors that Carey was a “nightmare” to work with (years ago.)
It’s now the next morning, and as predicted, there is another turn to the story: Simon Cowell has apparently dissed Mariah. Considering that Simon Cowell was reported as dissing Lady Gaga and others when that was an exaggeration, this is dubious at best. But the headlines aren’t: “Did Simon Cowell Dis New American Idol Judge Mariah Carey? (MTV. Related.) “Simon Cowell Is Already Judging “Idol” Newbie Mariah Carey.” (WSJ.) Here is that judgmental dissing, as reported by THR at the Television Critics Association press tour:
“I’m happy for her. I like Mariah. I think she’s going to find it difficult to say no… She’s sweet.”
Now, see, unless that ellipsis is leaving out crucial parts of the quote like “…that bloody pushover” or “…or do anything useful, really” or possibly “…unlike Beyonce, whom I really wanted instead,” this is not dissing. It’s also questionably accurate–does anyone really have this impression of Mariah? You could pick this apart–no, Mariah Carey is not automatically the Paula Abdul of the panel, especially when it might be a panel of one thus far. But it’s pointless. We’d say “can we please not wail and palpitate over every little thing that happens?” except even that’s not applicable because no little things have happened. So can we please not wail and palpitate over things that are completely made up? Wait until Mariah’s done even one teensy second of judging? Awesome. Thanks. We’ll see everyone in a few hours when Randy Jackson reportedly loses his shit.
* “Judging budget” is a cool phrase to say out loud.
