We’re selective about our fandom here at Popdust. We post about a lot of songs, and some songs we post about over and over again, but if we gush about them, there’s a reason–the difference between the “Call Me Maybe”s and “Curiosity”s of the singles world, one could say.
The reason we gush so much over M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” is twofold. One, it’s one of the best songs of 2012. (Yes, it’s July. Yes, we’re completely fine calling that now, especially since we found 100 last year.)
Two, it’s remarkably versatile. The original track banged, all the more so for being a screw-you-I’m-awesome track Maya released after people’d gotten pissed at her over trivial truffle-try stuff then, a week or so later, after they got pissed again about a silly incident at the Super Bowl everyone’s already forgotten about. Later on, it got a set of remixes that were even better. Switch’s beat managed to top Danja’s already-fantastic one, Missy Elliott reminded the world just how amazing she was, and Rye Rye stole the show with one scrappy, exhilarating verse. There were USB necklaces, too, which are pretty inherently cool.
This remix, by French DJ Surkin, is a little bit closer to the original. It’s less a remix, in fact, than a mix that just turns all the contrast knobs up to maximum, adding car alarms, handclaps and more bass. The string hook becomes a piccolo (we think) hook, the cars from the video show up in the audio mix proper, and everything becomes that much more awesome. We trust you’ll agree.
