Almost immediately after Frank Ocean posted his letter about falling in love with a man, everyone jumped all over one another to explain exactly what Ocean meant. Was he coming out? Was it a publicity stunt? Was it a response to anything Odd Future did or anything Tyler, the Creator specifically had in his lyrics? Was it sincere? Was it pre-meditated? Questions all, and questions everyone seemed to think they knew the answer to.
The one person who’s been mostly silent on the matter, as is his right, is Ocean himself. He’d spoken out on Twitter a couple times but didn’t do much besides. He’s now given an interview in The Guardian explaining the decision, and we can now officially stop backseat psychoanalyzing. Here’s part of it:
I knew that I was writing in a way that people would ask questions. I knew that my star was rising, and I knew that if I waited I would always have somebody that I respected be able to encourage me to wait longer, to not say it till who knows when.”
The full interview will be out tomorrow. (At which point he may or may not clarify how he chooses to identify himself, a decision that’s entirely up to him. Like we said: the backseat psychoanalyzing is getting really tiresome.)
