Info Post

We probably already said something like “This is the last ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ parody that you’ll need to watch” something like three or four viral video parodies ago, but this one really has that sense of finality about it. That’s mainly because creator Eric Schwartz actually uses the video as his opportunity to break up with the song, explaining that while he loved it for a while, it’s become “the most overplayed song ever” and is now being played “at [his] cousin Jacob’s Bar Mitzvah” and on “[his] grandmother’s new ringtone.”

Schwartz invites faux versions the other viral parodists of “Somebody That I Used to Know” along—including Darth Vader and Stoic Walk Off the Earth Guy—and together they whitewash the painted walls of the song’s music video. Fake-Gotye and Kimbra try to bully him in the video into reconsidering, or at least overplaying their other songs the same amount, but at the end, Schwartz escapes their clutches, into the hands of a new captor—Our Girl Carly Rae Jepsen, natch.

Cute video, and necessary closure for the entire Gotye/Kimbra experience. See you guys on the 2010s TimeLife collection.
