Madonna has been taking it on the chin from her French fans lately. She first irked them with her questionable move of performing with a visual of right-wing French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen with a swastika over her face—potentially facing a lawsuit from Le Pen as a result—and now, a gig she scheduled at Paris club l’Olympia to make up for the PR snafu has backfired on her as well. Madge left the stage after just a 45-minute performance—well short of her regular set length on the MDNA Tour—and was met with boos, and cries of “Rembourser!” (“Refund”) and “Salope” (“Slut” or “Bitch,” apparently depending on context, though does it matter?)
Rather than schedule yet another “unscheduled” gig in France in further apology, Madonna appears to be taking the Tough Noogies approach this time around. PR rep Liz Rosenberg offered the following in explanation:
The show was not billed as her full MDNA concert and tremendous effort was made to keep the ticket prices reasonable ($100 for 2,000 floor seats) and keep them strictly for her fans…The show cost Madonna close to a million dollars to produce. She has done a handful of club dates in the past and they were never more than 45 minutes. And by the way, she put on a fabulous show, which was streamed for millions of fans around the world.
So yeah—if you don’t like your unexpected, efficiently time, reasonably priced Madonna gigs, that’s on you, garçon. Madonna has bigger fish to fry in Vienna and Warsaw anyway.
