At Popdust, it is our job–one of them, at least–to keep up with the lucratively ludicrous world of pop stars’ product endorsements. Not just any will do, though. Perfumes and T-shirt lines won’t cut it. No,
For instance:
KATY PERRY ENDORSES POPCHIPS
Popchips are a popcorn/chip hybrid that Diddy and Ashton Kutcher have endorsed. Every part of that sentence might be news to you, unless you spend a lot of time in airports or have ever lost a few hours to people who blog about snack foods (as is bizarrely possible to do online). We’re choosing to think Katy Perry is one of those people, as she signed on to promote the chips and will do commercials for them in the fall. There’s absolutely no way that won’t be amusing.
Popchips look like this, by the way. We mention this because what you are looking at is the raw material for what will probably be Perry’s outfit in the commercial. Think of it as the snack version of a meat dress.
JASON ALDEAN SWITCHES BEER ALLEGIANCES
Sometimes deals like this have consequences. For instance, here’s an amusing little letter that’s been making the country-radio rounds, about country artist Jason Aldean:
Jason Aldean is in the process of signing an endorsement deal with the Coors Brewing Company. With that, he has changed the “Shiner Bock” line in the song “Take A Little Ride” to “A Couple Rocky Tops”. We respectfully request you exchange this version with the one you are currently playing.
Commenters seem to be more worked up about which brand of truck Aldean mentions, so the booze line might be beside the point, but let this nevertheless be a lesson to all country musicians: you can still sing about beer, as otherwise you’d lose a large part of your songwriting material; you’ve just got to be really, really generic about the sort of beer, unless you want to make devastating lyrical changes like the following:
Swing by the quick stop, grab a little Shiner Bock
Then ease on out your way
To your place around 8 o’clockSwing by the quick stop, grab a couple Rocky Tops
Then ease on out your way
To your place around 8 o’clock
Let this be a lesson also to Katy Perry, who is now obliged to scour her lyrics for anything representing a brand–that is, brands other than Katy Perry or, lately, Russell. We’d like to point out here that “Popsicle” is a trademark, as is “Barbie” (not, though, the barbecue). Don’t get too attached to those respective lines.
