Rain or shine, the show went on this weekend at Lollapalooza. The 20-year-old music festival, hosted in Chicago’s Grant Park, saw a lineup that included lots of talent both really old (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath), brand new (The Weeknd, Yuna) and somewhere in-between (Florence + The Machine, Metric, Santigold). We sorted through photos of the more than 140 bands that performed to pin down the biggest trends of the weekend. Discounting T-shirts and jeans (because come on, boring), there were five notable looks to try before summer ends—plus five outfits that stood out so much that they deserve their own mention.
TRENDS
1. STATEMENT NECKLACES: A few years ago it seemed like everyone was suffering from statement necklace fatigue; we’re glad that they’re back. Whether colorful, as seen on Malaysian singer-songwriter Yuna, or heavy-duty, as sported by M83′s Morgan Kibby, an oversize necklace always makes an outfit look more interesting.

2. RED LIPS
When it’s too hot to wear a lot of makeup (like when you’re jumping around on stage in August in Chicago, for instance), red lipstick is an easy way to appear polished. Marlana Sheetz of Milo Greene went with a classic shade while Hey Rosetta!’s Kinley Dowling picked a super-bright color that perfectly coordinated with her printed dress.

3. CHAMBRAY
Nothing says summer like a nicely-faded chambray shirt. Guys: Take a tip from The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Hey Rosetta!’s Tim Baker and push the sleeves up when it gets toasty out.

4. NEON
You can’t get away from neon this summer. It’s on shoes, jewelry, shirts—it’s everywhere. Just get on board already. Lead singer Nate Ruess of fun. went the safe (and comfortable) route at Lolla with florescent Nikes, while Santigold and Die Antwoord’s Yo-Landi Vi$$er weren’t afraid to go retina-searingly bright.

5. TROPICAL-PRINT SHIRTS
How to make a Hawaiian shirt look cool, not stuffy? Get one that’s fitted and roll the sleeves. This surprising (as in, we’re surprised we liked it) trend popped up on guys from Animal Kingdom and White Rabbits as well as on Kyle Woods (aka Kid Color).

STYLE MVPS
1. METRIC: It’s sparkly, it’s asymmetrical, it’s got cut-outs—basically, it’s Brazilian Carnival as a top.
2. FIRST AID KIT: The cut and the embroidery of these two dresses conjure a mellow seventies vibe that felt fresh.
3. BOWERBIRDS: Sure, it looks simple. But together, the white lace-and-black stripes, the high pony tail and the swipe of blue eyeshadow add up to a really cool look.
4. FLORENCE + THE MACHINE: Florence always kills it in the costume department, and this dramatic cape-like number is no exception.
5. TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS: Amazingly, this DJ managed to out-crazy his stage name with his outfit. Orlando Higginbottom, we salute you.
