Of course No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” is one of Kelly Clarkson’s favorite songs–the timeline matches up exactly, Clarkson growing up just as that song grew massive. And of course she pulls it off fantastically; Clarkson’s voice isn’t just strong but gritty enough to handle the emotions that song needs. (Growing up with the song helps with that too. Ask anyone in their twenties.)
So naturally the cover’s going to be good. Clarkson’s covers generally are. What we want to point out, though, is the part right before she sings, when she introduces the song. The crowd cheered at the very mention of No Doubt’s name, which is expected enough, but then Clarkson just keeps going on about how she loves No Doubt–sign of a true fan, there–then brings P!nk and her comeback into it, asking: “Wouldn’t it be cool if they both went on tour together? That’s my dream tour.” Ours too. Stronger‘s got a couple singles to promote still, you know.
