Info Post

There are probably more prominent female rappers this year, established and up-and-coming, than there’ve been years. Nicki Minaj is making chart records from it. Azealia Banks is getting countless blog headlines from it. Just this week, rapper Angel Haze got almost across-the-board acclaim for her excellent mixtape Reservation.

It’s telling just how many artists are working that these three are just arbitrary examples, not anything close to comprehensive. It’s also telling that no matter which three arbitrarily chosen MCs I mention, there’s probably a beef or accusations of a beef between them. The highest-profile ones generally involve Nicki Minaj and whomever, if only because her hits are the most global, but you’ll find them with anybody. It’s not a gender thing, not really–proportionally, there are probably just as many beefs per capita between male rappers–but it still means that every female rapper is automatically obligated to produce an opinion and take a side when asked. (Harsh, but not that harsh.)

Eve doesn’t seem to mind, though. She was remarkably candid when talking to MTV News about it:

[The current female-MC scene] sucks ’cause it’s lacking. It really is, you know? I mean, there are some dope females. Nicki is definitely holding it down. … Then obviously there are some dope females that are coming up. But I feel like when I was out and Missy [Elliott] was out, Kim, whatever, it was kind of shared in a sense and it’s not like that right now.

No sharing present. There's not even anyone else in the photo.

We are all in favor of forgoing pointless beefs in favor of awesome music and feel like we speak for a lot of people. This sort of posse cut is entirely doable, both right now when everybody guests on everything (“a good business move,” Eve called it) and historically. MTV mentioned the remix to Lil Kim’s “Ladies Night,” featuring Da Brat, Left Eye, Missy Elliott and Hot 97′s Angie Martinez. And for tracks out this year, we’ll add the “Bad Girls” remix with Missy Elliott and, depending on your mix of choice, Rye Rye or Azealia Banks. (Did you really think we’d pass up an opportunity to mention that?)

One more thing: if Eve ever wants to guest on any of the aforementioned rappers’ tracks — she’s already joined Kim onstage — we’d have no complaints about that either.
