Sheeeee’s a little bit pop, heeeee’s a little bit country…with Mariah Carey confirmed as one of the replacement judges for the upcoming Season 12 of American Idol, rumor has it that the show’s producers are going in a decidedly different direction with their next hire. Deadline reports that the show is looking for a judge from the country world to represent the fact that so many of their top-flight contestants (including winners Carrie Underwood and Scotty McCreery) have hailed from there. The first name on the producers’ list: Brad Paisley.
The move would make sense for a number of reasons—which, as Deadline mentions, include Paisley’s connections to those previously mentioned winners (Carrie dueted with him on “Remind Me” and has co-hosted the CMAs with him for the last several years, Scotty toured with him), and the fact that rival music reality competition The Voice has found success going the country route with Blake Shelton. Plus, Paisley is a charmer, has the following and experience of a veteran without actually being AARP-eligible, and should have some fun flirting (and/or feuding) with Mariah. The move would be a no-brainer, really.
But will he come at the right price? We know Idol wants to go cheap with their replacement hires, and Carey already put a dent in whatever savings they had left under the cushions with her $17 mil-a-year deal. If they can scrounge up the funds, though, we say go for it. It’ll be worth it for watching Randy try to suck up to him by namedropping endless country dudes he’s worked with alone.
