Info Post

For a solid seven consecutive weeks now, if you were a pop hopeful attempting to get to the top of the charts, then Our Girl Carly Rae Jepsen was in your way. Maroon 5 proved no match, Katy Perry has yet to rise to the challenge, and Ellie Goulding…well, she was probably just happy to be competing. With Carly Rae now reported to be spending her eighth week on top, “Call Me Maybe” ties Gotye and Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” for the longest-reigning #1 single of the calendar year, and the longest since Rihanna and Calvin Harris’ “We Found Love” spent ten weeks on top at the end of ’11 and beginning of ’12. Not bad for a Canadian Idol third-placer, eh?

Will Carly Rae get to raise her tally to nine next week, and continue her march towards Hot 100 history (already halfway there to the 16 weeks of “One Sweet Day”!)? Indications would seem to point to yes, as Carly’s numbers have actually increased in digital sales and online streams this week, though her radio plays have continued slipping. The principal challengers will come from Katy Perry, whose “Wide Awake” climbs to #2 this week (but whose sales numbers have started dropping), and from Flo Rida, whose “Whistle” continues to defy the odds by gaining in all three categories, jumping #6-#4 this week.

Still, we’d bet on Our Girl Carly Rae holding court for at least one more week, and leaving those Aussie suckers in the dust. It’s only right.
