Sia‘s transformation from tranquil singer-songwriter to Flo Rida / David Guetta singer and occasionally wacky The Voice coach was–well, it was probably part of her career plan, but it’s nevertheless as sudden a musical swerve as Ellie Goulding being a top 10 artist in the United States or the guy from The Format topping our charts.
David Guetta, on the other hand, knows no such things as “musical swerves.” Once you’ve heard one or two David Guetta songs, you’ve heard most David Guetta songs. There are minor differences like who’s singing or which chords get pounded out, but they’re the musical equivalent of buying the same shirt in 10 different colors: sticking with what you think works.
What this all means is that if you’ve heard “Titanium,” you’ve heard Guetta and Sia’s new collaboration “Falling to Pieces,” even in this distorted-audio live form. You can reverse-engineer the pieces:
1) Sia singing, as loudly and soulfully as she can muster, over a 4/4 beat and pianos that rise like a staircase.
2) Drop the bass, chop Sia’s voice, make sure everyone’s properly raving. (To learn how to properly rave, go here).
3) Repeat 1) and 2) until you’ve got a song’s worth.
It’s a professional job, executed professionally. It is what it is and does what it says, it gives the people what they want, which is to dance to A David Guetta Song, have a good, good night with hands in the air that the club can’t handle (dle dle dle…) It’s probably one of Guetta’s better songs, because Sia’s turning into one of his better vocalists. As plateaued careers go, you could ask for a lot worse.
