Info Post

There’s not much info yet on Mariah Carey’s upcoming solo album, and Carey was mum during a recent conference call to support upcoming single “Triumphant (Get ‘Em),” featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill and just released online. That said, we did learn a few things! Read on, then listen to the track below.

On “Triumphant”: Carey said she wrote the song when husband Nick Cannon was in the hospital. “There’s a lot of things you can take from there that can keep you going in a tough situation,” she said. (Those lyrics, by the way, can be found here. Or listened to below.)

On Rozay: “I’ve always wanted to do collaborations that people think are different.” In this case, it means Rick Ross, whom Carey said she met on the “Roc Boys” shoot, and Meek Mill, whom she said was a “natural” since Ross was already on the record.

On the current state of R&B: “I think it would be incredible if we could bring back the days when R&B records didn’t have to cross over but be massive hits on their own, were the soundtrack to people’s lives and make them happy. It makes me sad that there are so many talented R&B artists out there who don’t get the chance they should.”

On the dance-music craze specifically: The timeline on this, at least, checks out: “I was pregnant forever, and I was being tortured day and night by techno music. I was complaining to everyone who was listening. … One time I made dinner for L.A. Reid, and we were both sitting there like ‘What happened?’ ed. note: ! … What started to kind of get me was when hip hop and R&B music seemed to be getting bowled over by this. … I still make dance remixes myself, and I’ve had a lot of No. 1s on those charts, but right now, at this time, I decided to sing all the vocals for “Triumphant” like I used to do way back in the day, around the “Fantasy” time period. Then the dance/club remixers can do whatever they want to do, because I sang it at their tempo. … I just really didn’t want to go that direction just because it’s ‘in,’ and I didn’t want epople to be like ‘Oh, look at her, here she goes, trying to be the next blah blah blah.’”

The Song Itself: It’s not bad! It’s mostly Rick Ross and Meek Mill’s game, but Mariah delivers a properly triumphant chorus, and Meek’s “they told me ‘get ‘em,’ I got ‘em” will probably serve its intended purpose.

Oh, and three things you’re probably wondering whether it has: yes, it has a Maybach Music drop; yes, it has Mariah Carey’s whistle register (on the bridge and outro, as backing vocals); yes, it has Mariah singing four hues of crap out of the bridge. We’re hopeful.
