You can’t always tell anything about a song from thirty seconds. You can’t tell, for instance, whether there are awesome verses to go with the awesome chorus excerpted. You can’t tell where or whether there’ll be sudden swerves. If the song’s long enough, you can’t tell anything at all.
That said, there’s plenty you can tell about Mariah Carey’s “Triumphant (Get ‘Em), featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill, from the 30-ish-second preview (37 seconds, to be exact) online:
- Despite having both Rick Ross and Meek Mill on it, it sounds nothing like a Maybach Music track–it’s produced by Jermaine Dupri, like much of her former work. It sounds triumphant, but it doesn’t sound brash. She is not changing her name to Maybach MC.
- Mariah’s voice is as steely as ever. Well, as it’s been for the past few years. The verses, at least from this preview, aren’t noteworthy. They probably won’t steal the show.
- From what we’re hearing, this sounds a bit like Alicia Keys’ “New Day,” doesn’t it? (Not an insult.)
