Aubrey O’Day Miraculously Finds A New Way To Cover Gotye

Gotye, at least when speaking of “Somebody That I Used to Know,” is done. Dried-up. Dead (no, not really, god.) The Internet has spoken. Gotye has spoken too. There is nothing further anyone needs to do with “Somebody That I Used to Know,” and we can all move on to better, brighter covers.

Yeah, fine, no. We’re not done posting about “Somebody That I Used to Know” covers, nor are we going to pretend we’re done. (Check back Monday, everyone! The Olympic equestrian team paints their horses and covers “Somebody That I Used to Know,” then gets yelled at by P!nk, who does her own damn horseless Gotye cover!) This cover, however, is genuinely interesting. It’s by Aubrey O’Day, formerly of Danity Kane and of Popdust infamy, and you’ll hear why it’s interesting within the first few lines.

No, the interesting part’s not the chilly synth arrangement; that’s standard. The interesting part begins with “Now and then I think of when we were together / like when you told me that your marriage was a lie” and continues through all manner of other-woman excuses. It’s the JoJo treatment, in other words–rewriting the song from the woman’s perspective–and though it’s not perfect (what’d be really cool is if Kimbra’s verse became the wife’s verse; the cursing’s fine but doesn’t quite work with the meter), it’s interesting. For a Gotye cover, interesting is good. And check out how the guitar line gets sampled for verse two!

The only question now is what to call this. Aubrey O’tye?
